Finally Got Simple Zombies Working! Here's How I Did It (Step-by-Step)
To everyone who is (still) struggling to get Simple Zombies running — it finally works for me, and I wanted to share exactly how I did it, step by step.
💻 My Setup (Just for Context)
• I’m running an up-to-date version of Windows 11 on a high-end, recent PC.
• All my drivers and software are up to date.
• I’m playing GTA V through the Rockstar Game Launcher.
Not sure if any of that makes a difference, but hey — transparency never hurts.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Use the Legacy Version (Not Enhanced)
If you’re using the Rockstar Game Launcher like I am, this part is critical:
You need to install and mod the Legacy version of the game — not the Enhanced version.
I was never able to get the Enhanced version to work. It consistently crashed with a System.AccessViolationException — basically, a memory access violation that causes GTA to throw a tantrum and shut itself down. Not fixable, so let’s just avoid it.
>If you're on Steam or Epic, I don’t know whether the same version naming applies. But as a general tip: if your executable is called something other than GTA5.exe, your chances of this working might be slim.<
🛠 My Game Version & Mod Setup
•GTA V (Legacy version) – Build 3442
•ScriptHookV – Version v3442.0 / 812.8
•ScriptHookVDotNet – Version v3.7.0-nightly.20
•NativeUI – Version 1.9.1 Release
•Simple Zombies [.NET] by sollaholla – Version 1.0.2d (a98c4a)

🧽 Prep Work
1. Before modding, I did a complete clean slate:
2. Installed a fresh copy of the game.
3. Deleted all save games:
•Location: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V
4. Opened the Rockstar Game Launcher, went to Settings > General, and disabled BattleEye.
5. Launched the game and played Story Mode until I could save the game.
>Closed the game and shut down Rockstar Game Launcher completely via Task Manager.<
🧩 Installing the Mods
1. Downloaded and extracted all required mod ZIP files.
2. From the ScriptHookV_* folder:
•Copied everything inside the bin folder into the main game directory (where GTA5.exe is located).
Example path: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V Legacy
3. From the ScriptHookVDotNet* folder:
• Copied all files with the extensions .dll, .pdb, .ini, and .xml into the main game directory.
• Ignored the docs and Licenses folders.
4. Created a new folder in the game directory named scripts (no quotes).
5. From the a98c4a-ZombiesMod folder:
• Copied .dll and .pdb files into the scripts folder.
6. From the NativeUI folder:
• Copied .dll and .xml files into the scripts folder.
🧨 The Crucial Step: Run as Administrator
This was the game-changer.
If you skip this, you’ll likely run into the same memory access error I did.
• Navigate to your game’s install folder.
• Right-click on GTA5.exe > Run as Administrator.
>Once the game loads, hit F10 to open the Simple Zombies menu.<
🧟♂️ Switching to Zombie Mode
Opening the menu is just step one.
To actually enable the zombie mode:
• Hit F10 to open the menu.
• Select ‘Infected Mode’.
• This will remove all NPCs and traffic — and voilà, the undead start shambling in!
🎉 Enjoying the Apocalypse (Mostly)
So far, the mod works great for me. There are just a few small quirks:
• Broken-down vehicles aren’t burnt, which slightly dulls the apocalyptic atmosphere — but hey, minor detail.
• Weapon sounds are standard GTA fare — not as gritty or realistic as what you hear in some YouTube videos like those by ToastedDesk. I suspect he used additional sound mods.
• Car trunks can’t be opened, which again may require another mod. Not a dealbreaker.
• My story-mode personal vehicle doesn’t despawn, which is a bit immersion-breaking.
Other than that? No complaints! It runs stable, smooth, and brings a solid survival vibe.
🙌 Final Thoughts
If you’ve been frustrated trying to get this mod to work, I feel you. It took a ton of trial and error. But now that it’s up and running — totally worth it.
Let me know if you’ve got any questions, or if this helped you get it working too.
Happy surviving! 🧟♀️
