Ford Capri Group 5
The Ford Zakspeed Capri was created and developed by a private racing team in Germany founded by Erich Zakowski in 1968. In the late 1970s Zakspeed was the official Ford team in Germany, competing in the DRM series (Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft), the predecessor to todays current DTM series. In 1977 Group 5 regulated cars were brought into the fold, which massively shook up the series, allowing these turbo charged monsters to compete.
Zakspeed took the Mark 3 Capri and developed it with the philosophies of extreme weight reduction and high downforce. The car was almost unrecognisable as a Capri apart from its iconic front grill and curvaceous roof line. Due to its Formula 1 inspired ground effect Venturi diffuser and floor, along with thin aluminium panels, it boasted an impressive power to weight ratio. Competing between the years of 1978 and 1983 against the infamously more powerful Porsche 935s it won the overall championship in the 1981 DRM season at the hands of Klaus Ludwig.
